SZA: SOS – SZA’s Obviously Singin’

Our next album was chosen by me. I have been looking to listen to more SZA after hearing her a bit as a feature on Kendrick Lamar songs. Chose this album basically at random.

I think one consistent theme in these albums reviews is thinking that a lot of the album is a bit samey to us. Can’t tell if that’s because they are and it takes a special kind of artist to be able to take you on a journey through an album (thinking of the Beatles here). But it might also just be because I lack enough experience in the music style to see the differences in the song and am just picking up the similarities. Liv says that she loved that some of the songs sounded quite different though so I might be wrong in my assessment.

Either way, can’t argue with SZA’s talent, her voice is just amazing. Enjoyed this album more on a second listen. Think the music was a bit samey but I would consider listening to this album again when I’m in the right mood. Think F2F which sounded a bit more, rocky, grungy? a bit more dirty and real was a really good change in the album and I liked hearing the change. I think so far this has been the best album that I have picked (competition was Smerz and Tame impala).

Oscar – I liked Kill Bill, and Ghost in the Machine. was going to give it a 3, but I liked it more on a second listen.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Joe – Didn’t love it, not really his thing. When the music is all digital effects and you can’t hear instruments, it doesn’t do much for Joe. There is electronic music that he likes but often the point of that is using digital music to make interesting sounds that you couldn’t usually make. whereas for him this album used digital music but just sounded generic, wasn’t using it for anything interesting.

Liv – Loved SZA before listening and Kill Bill has been a fav of mine for a while. Really enjoyed the album and listened while strolling home from work on a warm Friday arvo which fit super nicely. Loved that there were some songs in there that were quite different. I think Kill Bill is still my favourite, but standouts are Low, Shirt and Forgiveless.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Squid – A very chill listen, but not enough to break up the album. A lot of goodies I’ll go back to listen to individually though. Faves were Seek & Destroy, Shirt, Ghost in the Machine and Used.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
