Perhaps one of Melborune’s best kept secrets, local-fast food franchise Luke’s Banh Mi is well worth the hype.
Situated across the cultural hubs of Melbourne, Luke’s boasts an incredible variety of banh mis at a reasonable price. Honky, Squid and I ventured to Puckle Street, Moonee Ponds to see what the fuss what about. We were strapped with Yowie researcher gear and devastated that our latest expedition in Geelong was called off early due to the weather (it was sunny and we weren’t expecting it).
At 9:00am on a Monday morning, we purchased Lemongrass Beef, Luke’s Favourite and a Vegan Tofu banh mi with two Vietnamese iced coffees. The baguette bread was freshly baked, the meat succulent and the iced coffee satiating, although very bitter. We were left in a pleasant food coma before our departure from Victoria.
Squid’s rating categories are as follows:
1. big daikon
2. Strength of bread
3. Umami achieved without pâté
4. Could this banh mi save my life?
Cinna – 4.5 / 5
Honky – 4 / 5
Squid – 4.5
